Cape Country Routes, was
started in 1997 by a group of enterprising independent hotels and country
inns, to encourage visitors to explore the scenic, romantic and historic
routes between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. The routes are expanded to take
in the Whale, Shark and Dolphin Route, the West Coast and Wild Flower route,
the Cederberg Rock Art route and the first Brandy Route in South Africa - on
Route '62'.
The main historic route -
"Route 62" which runs through the mountain valleys of the Little
Karoo, used to be the main road between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, linking
rural communities with two important harbour towns. Now the partially
forgotten but resurrected "Route 62" winds through beautiful
mountain passes, fruit farms, ostrich farms, small rural
towns, malaria-free game reserves and valleys of continuous
orchards and vineyards.
Where the Garden Route is well
known for its green, lush coastal splendors, Route 62 is now recognized for
the Harley-Davidson rides, awesome mountain passes and fertile valleys. It can
also boast with the longest wine route in the world, the heart of Brandy
distilling and the home of Port wine and the capital of the ostrich
industry at Oudtshoorn..
