Scimitar Oryx

IDENTIFICATION: A beautiful animal with long scimitar-shaped horns. A large antelope, pale in color except for its reddish brown neck and chest. The face is white with brownish markings. Horns: Both sexes have horns.

DISTRIBUTION: South Africa- Private Land Only.

HABITAT: Semi-desert areas, seldom entering any true desert areas.

HABITS: Grazer. Gregarious, usually found in herds of 10-40 animals. Herds consist of females, males and young. Very seldom come across solitary animals. Can survive for extended periods of time without water.

INTERESTING HUNTING NOTES: The Scimitar Horned Oryx has been bred successfully on private land throughout South Africa. They are hunted in very similar conditions to that of Gemsbuck and display the same characteristics with males having slightly thicker horns than the females. An interesting trophy to harvest.
