A Journey into Mozambique

MOZAMBIQUE – Zambezi Delta

August saw John X Safaris hunting in Mozambique. Long time friends, Rich Adams and Steve Robinson joined PH’s Carl van Zijl, LJ Marais, Glen Haldane and Gary Phillips in Coutada 11, Zambezi Delta , for a 16 day Safari . Both parties were interested in Cape Buffalo, Sable, Crocodile, Hippo, Leopard and a host of Plains Game Species. We enjoyed a truly amazing area, were fortunate to witness up to 300 Sable on certain days and enjoyed the pleasure of hunting Buffalo in herds of up to 350 animals. We visited the Mighty Zambezi River, launched at Chapunga and traveled upstream in search of Crocodile, both parties were very lucky in harvesting 2 monsters, a 13 foot 7 and a 12 foot 8. A certain highlight on our hunts were the trips into the swamps, a few of us enjoyed the luxuries of LJ’s Spike Camp, a complete experience on its own! Late nights calling for Spotted Hyena and the tension of a loud “woop” only meters away kept more than most on their toes. There are so many great memories of this trip, may it have been hunting Suni and Blue Duiker in the forest , tracking Buffalo via Egrets in the Swamps or enjoying a cold beer around the camp fire, a trip of a lifetime it was. So, when the dogs picked up a big Leopard track on the last evening of the hunt it was inevitable that our Safari should end with a monster Leopard, not a bad Mozambican farewell for an already super Safari !
