South African Long Range University 2012

14th February 2012

For the first time ever, the leader in long-range shooting, Gunwerks, will be hosting it’s very own long-range shooting school in South Africa.  John X Safaris will be the host, where the hunter looking for that something new can join us for a 10 day African adventure. This will be no ordinary shooting school…..

USA / Country of Origin – South Africa:  Leaving from the USA you will fly either with Delta or South African Airways.  Your point of entry into South Africa will be Johannesburg.  In Johannesburg you will be met by Air 2000 Hunters Support, who will guide you through the entire customs process ensuring your guns and luggage transfer to the Port Elizabeth connection flight is a hassle free experience.  Please check with Air 2000 at the time of your safari what the rates will be for their service. Contact Air 2000 Hunters Support on Air2000@global.co.za.

From Johannesburg you will board a short commercial connection (1 hr 40 min) on South African Airways to Port Elizabeth, where you will be met by John X Safaris.  Please note that South African Airways is the ONLY registered carrier to carry rifles domestically within South Africa.  Port Elizabeth to base camp is a mere 1 hr drive.

DAY 1

You and your buddy, sharing a one suite chalet (cabin) will be woken for an early morning cup of steaming African Coffee.  After a quick bite on a continental breakfast you will head out on a morning game drive.John X Safaris

This will give you the opportunity to view the Big 5 and Plains Game up close and personal on an open game viewing land cruiser.  You’ll be back at the lodge by 11.00 for a scrumptious brunch.  After brunch, shooting school will begin and run for the remainder of the day.  Topics covered include:

  • Terminal Ballistics and Bullet Performance
  • External Ballistics and Trajectory Validation
  • Ballistic Compensation Techniques
  • Long Range Shooting Equipment
  • Cartridge/Ammunition Selection
  • Shooting Fundamentals
  • Range Shooting Basics
  • Rifle Cleaning and Maintenance

DAY 2

Gunwerks will continue on their shooting school with classes and practice, heading out to the range to put you and your rifle toJohn X Safaris the test, the fun now really begins!  Life size African trophy targets is just the start to your African adventure!  The balance of the course material and shooting covers the following topics:

  • Rangefinding, Errors and Equipment
  • Wind Deflection, Reducing and Reading
  • Correcting for Air Density Changes
  • Measuring and Correcting for Shot Angle
  • Exploring Spin Drift and Coriolis
  • Shot Placement
  • Advanced/Field Shooting

DAY 3

Gunwerks will continue on their long-range training with practical field application of your training and techniques.  You will be heading out to the field during the day to put the theory and practical of the previous 2 days to the test, giving each hunter the opportunity to harvest one cull animal.  The choice of cull animal may vary between Impala, Blesbuck or Warthog.  We will wrap up the day with Q&A and discussion of the days events.

DAY 4 – 8

You’ve now learnt about your Gunwerks shooting system, you’ve put the theory to the test on the range and in the field, it’s time for you to start your hunt with John X Safaris.  At this point depending on your request prior to the safari you will pair up with a buddy and a Professional hunter, hunting 2×1 or 1×1.

You will hunt from John X Safaris Coastal area for another day or two, depending on your species of preference.  For those hunters choosing a number of species from our Northern areas they will travel and stay in one of our 3 northern areas ( 3-4 hours from base camp on the coast) for a minimum of two nights, depending on what you’re hunting and how the hunt is going.  Time frames and trophy “wish lists” are mere guidelines for John X Safaris to plan your hunt on, neither are set in stone.

 John X Safaris

DAY 9-10

Having enjoyed John X Safaris Northern Areas, you will start heading back to John X Safaris base camp on the coast for the remainder of your safari.  Hunters can enjoy their last few days of their safari either hunting any remaining species on their wishlist, spending a day game driving, or taking part in the many tourist activities in the surrounding area, namely, Elephant back safaris, deep-sea fishing, golfing, curio shopping etc.

On the last day of the safari or the morning of the day of departure, depending on how the hunt is going (hunters can hunt until dark on day 10), the final bill, permits and documentation will be completed and settled.

John X Safaris will then transfer you to Port Elizabeth Airport for the start of your journey home.

Please note any hunters wanting to extend their time in South Africa, by touring or sightseeing can do so without any hassle. John X Safaris together with Free Walker Adventures can assist with regards tours, information and attractions that may be of interest after your safari has been completed.  Trips down the Garden Route, Port Elizabeth to Cape Town, are the most popular and certainly something to look into for those wanting to extend their stay in South Africa.

South Africa – USA / Country of Origin:  Leaving from Port Elizabeth, after a John X Safaris representative has checked both you and your rifles onto the Johannesburg connecting flight, you will once again be met by Air 2000 Hunters Support in Johannesburg.  They will once again assist you with your rifles and luggage, ensuring you are set on your way back to the USA.
