A week of R&R for some of us…

This past week saw Gary on Safari with the Art family, while the rest of us had a break and got into some hunting and fishing of our own.
Jose and Juan joined Rick for fantastic offshore angling on the Indian Ocean and met up with Carl on Friday for our annual Bushbuck hunt.

Rick and brother, Ferdie, got caught up in some of the action to. Ferdie the obvious winner with a fantastic Cob.

Our annual Bushbuck hunt is a highlight on our calender and one that no one wants to miss. It’s a hunt of tradition that goes back many generations. Hunters with their best hounds take on the big-hearted Cape Bushbuck in the undergrowth of our coastal forests on a driven hunt.

The prized trophy on a Bushbuck hunt.

A typical hunt entails hunting a selected area where an agreed quota is strictly followed to harvest a sustainable quota of game every year. Hunters may hunt Cape Bushbuck, Common Duiker and Bushpigs. Most importantly, NEVER may any Bushbuck females be harvested.
This year’s hunt was another great hunt with 2 Bushbuck and 2 Bushpig being harvested. Friendships rekindled and fun was had by all.

Uncle Hennie got lucky and got this old Bushpig boar on one of the first drives.

The highlight of our hunt – Jose, our visiting Mexican friend getting a Bushpig.

On a sad note, we lost Ringo, one of the head dogs in the pack. Cape Bushbuck are renowned for being extremely aggressive when wounded or cornered. This particular Bushbuck was no different and left 4 dogs injured and one dead.

The Bushbuck that injured 4 dogs and took Ringo’s life. Notice the horns extremely sharp tips.

Morne, our Dog Packs’ owner, with Magic the Jack Russel. Magic was one of the dogs injured by the Bushbuck.

The guys getting Magic stitched up in the field. Luckily for him, the fact that his body weight is so much less than that of a big hound, the Bushbuck tossed him off on impact. The heavier the dog the more pressure is absorbed during impact.

Finishing off the last of Magic’s stitches. He’ll be off hunting for a few weeks, but will be back soon, stronger and wiser than before.

Hunting gets back to normal again this week with our first Italian hunters joining us for a 10 Day Plains Game hunt. We’ll keep you posted and up to date on how they’re doing.

Until next week – we’re out hunting!
